Machine Translation systems

I have talked about Machine Translation before. Now, Im'm going to give some exaples of machine translation systems. But, before that, I'd like to mention that if we translate something from Spanish to a language which is very different to Spanish, such as German and Arabic, the results will not be successful. But, if we translate a text written in Spanish to Catalan or Italian, we will have a better translation.

In this web, where we can check what I have said, we can find some examples of machine translation systems.

Definitions and differences

In the following lines I'm going to describe some concepts which are related to automatic translation:

  • Machine Translation (MT): it is "a sub-field of computational linguistics that investigates the use of computer software to translate text or speech from one natural language to another. At its basic level, MT performs simple substitution of words in one natural language for words in another. Using corpus techniques, more complex translations may be attempted, allowing for better handling of differences in linguistic typology, phrase recognition, and translation of idioms, as well as the isolation of anomalies."
  • Machine Aided Human Translation ( MAHT): "The human translator controls the translation process. The translation is done mostly by himself, but he can ask the machine for help if needed. The machine's part is to translate single words or word groups (mostly dictionary search), to make suggestions e.g. for synomyms or to translate a special part of the text, if the translator demands it. The human intervention takes place before and during the translation process."
  • Multilingual Content Management (MCM): "Un CMS es un sistema de gestión de contenidos, Content Management System." The system " se trata generalmente de un conjunto de herramientas, apoyado habitualmente por una base de datos, y que consisten en una serie de programas en un servidor web, y, opcionalmente, una serie de programas cliente que te permitan acceder fácilmente a esos programas en el servidor."

So, these three are different because of the different technique used. Finally, I think the Translation Technology is a computer technology which translates texts. This concept refers to all the translation systems mentioned before.

Translation task

According to the FEMTI (Framework for Machine Translation Evaluation in ISLE) report, "Characteristics of the translation task refers to the information flow intended for the output, from the point of view of the agent (human or otherwise) who receives the translation". These are the main characteristics of the translation task:

  • Assimilation: the aim of the assimilation task is to control the "relatively" big volume of texts "produced by people outside the organization, in (usually) several languages".  Here, document routing or sorting, information extraction or summarization and search are included.
  • Dissemination: its objective is to  "deliver to others a translation of documents produced inside the organization". Here, we can't forget about the  internal or in-house dissemination (routine and experimental) and the external dissemination - publication (single client and multi-client).
  • Communication: the communication's task main objective is to "support multi-turn dialogues between people who speak different languages". We have  synchronous and asynchronous communication.

There are other characteristics which can be read in the previous link.

International meetings on Computational Linguistics

I'm going to make a comment on the following internacional meetings on Computational Linguistics:

  • Association for Computational Linguistics Conference 2007. At first, I'd like to talk about what ACL is. The ACL has something to do with peolple who are closely related to "working on problems involving natural language and computation". "An annual meeting is held each summer in locations where significant computational linguistics research is carried out". But, we can't forget about the regional associations which are related to the ACL. Here, we have to mention the EACL (The European Chapter of the ACL) and the NAACL ( The North American Chapter of the ACL). I'm going to talk a little bit more about the last one in the next paragraph.  Continuing with this year ACL's  conference, it will take place in Prague from 23 to 30 of June. The main conference will be given between 25th  and 27th  of June. These are the people who will take part in it: John Carrol (General conference chair), Eva Hajicova (Local organization chair), Anna Kotesovcova (Secretariat) and Priscilla Rasmussen (Registration).
  • Human Language Technologies Conferece: The Annual Conference of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics 2007. Rochester (NY) will be the venue for this conference from 22 to 27 of April. We can read the names of the conference organizers if we click here and the schedule in this website.
  • Finally, I'm going to talk about the "XXIII Congreso Anual de la Sociedad Española para el Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural". In this case, it will be hold in September, in Sevilla. One of the objectives of this society is to spread the investigation and development carried out by the researchers related to Natural Language Processing. These the themes that will be discussed: Automatic Translation, Linguistic, Mathematical and Psicolinguistic models of the language, Industrial Aplications of the NLP and Authomatic Analysis of the Textual Contents, among others.

Reasons to study Language Technologies

Technologies are becoming necessary in our society more an more and we can find them useful in many fields. Philology is not an  exception, and languages need new technologies too. So, we can find some reasons to study Human Language Technologies. In the following lines I'm going to write some of them.

At first, I have to mention that EUROMAP did a study which has to do with Language Technologies in 2003. If we look at it, we will read that " HTL thrives in the conditions that support the information revolution - high levels of relatively affordable computing capacity, and virtually universal connectivity".

In that study we can also read that HLT have brought advantages to Europe. Thanks to new technologies we are able to use many languages in our everyday life, and this "is an increasingly familiar aspect of business, leisure, government and civil society".

In addition, "many of the products and services of the information society will be built on core HLT components. The importance of HLT goes well beyond the obvious, and penetrates into the deepest layers of the Internet and the web, where the ability toprocess the components of language - coding knowledge and intelligence into the information infrastructure - will be the basis for next-generation technology."

But, we can't forget about the Multilingual Semantic Web, which will be possible thanks to HLT. Accordin to this research, the future internet generation "will embed core linguistic data at the heart of the web. The Semantic Web initiative aims to capture and encode the semantics of all types of digital content, and use that embedded knowledge to enable more predictable levels of interaction between different systems and services." Finally, I'd like to add that "HLT will be a key embedded technology as next-generation ICT products and services emerge from the lab."
